Homebound vs. Not Homebound
Medicare quantifies a homebound patient as one that is unable to leave their home to receive treatment because of physical, mental limitations, or other medical conditions.
To be considered homebound, a patient must have meet one of two criteria:
- Need the aid of supportive devices like crutches, canes, or walkers—or require the assistance of another person or the use of special transportation
- Have a condition such that leaving his or her home is medically contraindicated
If a patient meets one of the above, the following requirement must also be met:
- An inability to leave home leaving home must require a considerable and taxing effort.
